the point where in just a couple of days the law says that every american's tax rates are going up. every american's paycheck will get a lot smaller. and that would be the wrong thing to do for our economy. it would hurt middle class families and hurt the businesses that depend on your spending and congress can prevent it from happening, if they act now. leaders in congress are working on a way to prevent this tax hike on the middle class and i believe we may be able to reach an agreement that could pass both houses in time. >> the president will have another chance to deliver that message, again. this morning he will appear on nbc's "meet the press." his first sunday talk show appearance in three years. mr. obama is expected to call on a scale back plan that would only extend middle class tax breaks and unemployment benefits if the negotiations fail. republican senator mitch mcconnell is hoping there will be a plan to present today. >>> some sad news from hollywood. harry carey jr. has died. best known for his work in westerns appeared in almost 100 films including ten with john w

police are going to file a charge, so to say. which present before a court of law here in india in the next 30 days is what police are saying. >> what is the condition of the young woman? >> she continues to be in critical shape right now. yesterday the doctors had released a medical bulletin where they said that she was doing well. they also helped her take a few steps, but, really, the condition right now is that she had trouble breathing, again, this morning. so, the doctors, again, looking at putting her back on ventilator support. so, she's not well at all. and various procedures that were involved in saving this girl involved removing her abdomen completely. so, it's really a difficult time while the entire country, certainly, is praying for her. >> that just sounds horrible. there have been, correct me if i'm wrong, but there has been a surge in rape attacks in new delhi recently, is that correct? >> that is correct. you know, delhi has seen a number of rape attacks. if we look at the numbers by police last year, it stood at around 625. so, the rapes have been there. but bec

three main points he's saying. he wants to make sure there's a law passed that ensures 98% of americans know their taxes are not going to go up in just under two weeks. he also wants to make sure that 2 million americans who would otherwise lose their unemployment benefits if we went over the fiscal cliff would be able to keep those benefits. and finally he says, look, we can take a look at the longer term proposals, the larger reform at a later point. just lay the ground work at this point. we also know before the president left, he talked by phone with house speaker john boehner. he met in person with harry reid, although what the private happened, we don't know. but publicly things sound a lot like they have for the past few weeks. take a listen. >> every member of congress believes that, every democrat, every republican. so there is absolutely no rea n reason, none, not to protect these americans from a tax hike. at the very least, let's agree right now what we already agree on. let's get that done. >> what the president has offered so far simply won't do anything to solve

governor rick snyder signed a new abortion law for his state. the controversial measure requires any clinic that performs more than 120 abortions a year to become a quote licensed free standing surgical outpatient facility. it also takes steps to ensure pregnant women are not being coerced into a decision and includes rules that a physician must follow to, quote, properly and respectfully dispose of fetal remains. supporters say the bill protects the patients. critics argue it will force clinics to shut down and restrict access for women. >>> a tail of two cities as chicago's homicide rate increases topping 500 murders in the year, by the way. new york city's on pace for the lowest murder rate since 1963. that is when they began keeping records. as of yesterday, four days before the new year, of course, the city had 414 homicides, that's 57 less than the previous low back in 2009. the high for a single year was 2,245 back in 1990. wow. mayor michael bloomberg says the numbers are another sign that the big apple is the, quote, safest big city in america. >>> to a cnn exclusive now. new infor
